Maurice de Vlaminck’s bundled strokes in the Fauvist style have become fields of color here. The contours of the bridge and the buildings dissolve in the reflection on the surface of the water. The restrained hues, the use of gray rather than primary colors, is evidence that he was exploring the gray and ocher tones in the Cubist idiom of Pablo Picasso, whom he had met in 1906.
