Vlaminck recalled the early history of Impressionism in the forest of Fontainebleau with this path in the underbrush. Broad and expressive impasto gives the composition a strong geometric structure. Vlaminck’s incentive to paint abstractly is an intensification of Claude Monet’s motto: it is not important what you paint, but how you paint it.
