Maurice de Vlaminck painted this picture in Bougival, a place that Renoir and Monet had already visited in the 1860s. Fifty years later Vlaminck approached the language of Cubism through his study of Paul Cézanne: the stone façades are illuminated like white cubes in the picture space.
