While many Fauve painters focused on the landscape of southern France, Maurice de Vlaminck concentrated on the surroundings of his home in Rueil near Paris. Here he painted the boathouse of the restaurant La Fournaise on the Île de Chatou, which was also the location of the studio he shared with André Derain. He captured the familiar surroundings using drastic cropping and vigorous impasto.
