The title of the painting refers to an unseasonable weather phenomenon that frequently occurs on Saint Martin’s Day on November 11. Although temperatures can rise to surprising heights at this late time of the year, it can also coincide with ground frost, as Alfred Sisley showed here with the white residue of the hoarfrost in the furrows of the road.
