Unlike Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley exclusively painted landscapes. He composed this morning scene in winter using vibrant colors, contrasting the bright blue of the sky and river with the orange tones of the bushes and trees. The long shadows of the poplars endow the composition with a rhythmic tension.
