Claude Monet has transformed the rich colors of the autumn leaves into a patchwork of multicolored daubs of paint. The contrasts between the pure, delicately applied tones create a shimmering effect that picks up on the movement of the leaves along the riverbank and their reflection on the water. The course of the river Seine remained one of the artist’s favorite motifs until the late 1890s.
