Paul Cézanne depicted the space with clusters of brushstrokes in dull tones of green, blue, and brown. The underbrush is structured by tree trunks growing parallel like stanchions. Dark strokes of paint trace the underdrawings, keeping them visible in the completed picture. The intertwining surfaces and the reduced palette of colors made Cézanne a pioneer of Cubism.
